FAQs

What is LED Tape?

LED Tape is a long thin flexible strip  with high quality commercial grade LEDs fitted along it’s length. Sometimes referred to as LED strip lights.

What is the difference between commercial grade and standard LED tape?

Concept LED only supply commercial grade LED Tape.  Commercial grade means premium components used throughout to produce a QUALITY product built to last. Ideal for commercial applications.

The difference between commercial and standard is in the PCB, resistors and the LED’s themselves. Concept LED’s commercial grade LED Tape uses a 2oz PCB board to give better heat dispersion resulting in a longer life of up to 50,000 hours continuous use (standard grade will start to deteriorate in as little as 2000 hours).

Commercial grade LED Tape uses a branded SMD as opposed to inferior copies used on standard tape, this means that the commercial grade LED Tape will be around 30% brighter than the standard. Commercial grade LED Tape has colour consistent LED’s  giving consistency of colour from reel to reel. Standard LED Tape can give different colours from LED to LED and from reel to reel.

What wattage LED Tape do I need?

Concept LEDs 5w and 10w white LED Tapes are ideal for feature lighting and to highlight specific areas, this is also the case for the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) 7.5w. They are ideal for areas such as plinths,  covings and  drop down ceilings etc. The 15w white LED Tapes can be used for general lighting, kitchen and display cabinets and replacing fluorescent tubes. The 15w RGB LED Tape can be used in areas which require a coloured light brighter than the standard feature lighting or for areas with more ambient light.

What colour does LED tape come in?

Concept LED can supply LED Tape in single colours:

  • Red
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Amber
  • Warm White
  • Cool White

Colour changing:

  • Red, Green, Blue
  • Red, Green, Blue, Warm White
  • Red, Green, Blue, Cool White
  • Smart White (Warm White, Cool White)

What length does the LED Tape come in?

Concept LED supply tape as standard in 5 metre rolls but we can supply custom lengths to suit your requirements.  Please contact us for further details and a free quote.

Can I cut the LED Tape?

We can cut the LED Tape to meet your requirements but if you wish to cut the tape yourself simply measure the length you require and cut at the nearest marked cutting point on the tape.

Can I extend the length of the LED Tape?

Concept LED provide a full joining service so LED Tape can be supplied to your requirements.  Please contact us for further details and a free quote.

How do I fix the LED Tape?

All our LED Tape comes with 3M adhesive backing for ease of installation.  Alternatively we can supply extrusions to house the LED Tape to provide further versatility and a more finished appearance.

Is the LED Tape waterproof?

All our IP65 rated LED Tape is water resistant and can be used in areas where there is likely to be damp, steam or condensation.  It is not suitable for immersion in water.  For details of our submersible LED Tape Please contact us .

What is the difference between LED Tape and LED Pixel Tape?

LED Tape can be single colour or colour changing but at any one time every LED on that tape will be the same colour.  LED Pixel Tape allows you to change the colours of the LEDs individually to produce animated light moving effects such as colour chasing, colour waves, strobing and fading.

What does an address writer do?

The Concept LED Address Writers allow you to do away with the additional expense and complication of a separate decoder for every Pixel installation.  The address writer is used on Pixel Nodes and Pixel Tape to assign individual addresses to each LED making them individually programmable via Direct DMX512.

What is DMX512?

DMX512 is a standard for digital communication networks that are commonly used to control stage lighting and effects. It was originally intended as a standardized method for controlling light dimmers, which, prior to DMX512, had employed various incompatible proprietary protocols. It soon became the primary method for linking controllers (such as a lighting console) to dimmers and special effects devices such as fog machines and intelligent lights. DMX has also expanded to uses in non-theatrical interior and architectural lighting, at scales ranging from strings of Christmas lights to electronic billboards. DMX can now be used to control almost anything, reflecting its popularity in a huge variety of venues and locations.

What is the difference between a driver and a transformer?

There is no difference.  Some people call it a driver and some a transformer.  It is required to transform or drive the mains 240v electricity down to 24v to run the LED tape.

How do I work out how many metres of LED Tape I can run off a transformer?

Time for some maths! To work this out take the wattage of the transformer and divide it by the wattage of the LED Tape per metre, this will give you the total length in metres you can run off the transformer.

For example a 100w transformer divided by 5w per metre is the calculation   100/5  =  20m, this means you can run up to a maximum of 20m of LED tape off this transformer.
